March 2012
In this month’s “Professionally Speaking”, The Magazine of the Ontario College of Teachers, there is a “Teacher Tip” written by the Managing Editor, Jacqueline Kovacs. She describes a tip for classroom management that can be used to quiet a class. She writes that the teacher times how long the class is noisy. “That was how much time he would deduct from a popular activity, such as gym or art.” She continues to describe how the students would then pressure each other to behave. To have this practice printed in our professional magazine as a “Teacher Tip” by the very organization that is charged with the supervision and regulation of teacher professional practice and competence in Ontario, is absolutely deplorable. Posted is a response that was sent to the Ontario College of Teachers on behalf of OSPHE as well as a personal response that was sent from Joanne Walsh.
